Ways To Monitor Your Data Usage

17th January 2019

Are you a self-professed heavy data user? Or do your work patterns mean usage on your business phone can fluctuate month to month?

Perhaps your monthly usage stays consistent? There is still good reason for keeping a track on your activity.

Say you are off on holiday somewhere nice & sunny in Europe where you can now use your UK tariff-free of charge just like you would at home.

You are spending your days lounging by the pool, passing your time browsing the web and checking the news. You decide to upload some holiday pics to social media, captioning a photo of a cocktail “I’ve had worse Monday’s!”.

You may not be using your phone more than you normally would but it may be that you usually spend most of your day connected to your work’s wi-fi and your evening connected to wi-fi at home. You are now using cellular data for all your usual activities.

Stay in control of your usage by utilising the data monitoring tools available to you. Whether using a built-in feature on your phone or employing a 3rd party monitoring app, here’s what you need to know.

First of all, data doesn’t always run from the beginning to the end of the month. Your data refreshes on your bill date so it’s worth finding out when that is.

How to monitor your data usage on Samsung

To see how much cellular data that you’ve used, go to:
Settings > Connections > Data Usage > Mobile data usage

In the data usage menu, you can check how much you have used, set data limits or change the expected billing cycle for your data.

How to monitor your data usage on iPhone

To see how much cellular data that you’ve used, go to:
Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data (options differ depending on your device).

Scroll down to find which apps are using cellular data.

Unlike Samsung, you can’t input your bill date and tariff allowance or set usage limits.

However, you can reset your statistics on your bill date each month to start a fresh monitoring period in line with your billing cycle.

To reset these statistics, go to Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Reset Statistics.

Tailor what apps use your mobile data

If you don’t want an app to use cellular data, you can easily adjust your settings so it only works on wifi.

You can also set background app refreshes to only complete on wifi.

On your Android phone, go to: Settings > Data Usage > Select an app > Toggle Restrict Background App Data.

For iPhone, got to: Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Toggle app on/off.

Wi-Fi Assist

Another feature to watch out for on iPhone is Wifi Assist. This feature allows your phone to automatically convert to using mobile data when it deems your cellular connection to be stronger than your wifi. Leaving you open to using mobile data when you think you are connected to wifi.

To switch wifi assit off go to: Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Wi-Fi  Assist > Toggle on/off.

Data Monitoring App: My Data Manager

If you want to have even more visibility of your usage then try the free My Data Manager app available for both iOS Apple and Android.

This provides you with additional monitoring capabilities such as call and text tracking if you are on a capped plan. It also allows you to check data usage across everyone in your shared or family plan or across multiple Devices.

Depending on which mobile network you are with and what tariff you are on, you may also receive usage warning messages directly from your network.

And of course, if you are a customer of 8020 we will highlight any high usage as part of our regular bill reviews!
