iOS 10: Everything you need to know

15th June 2016

It’s official; in what Apple are calling their biggest release yet, iOS 10 will hit your iPhones and iPads this Autumn. Apple has revealed its latest operating system update at the annual Apple Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco. With updates to Messages, Maps, Photos and Siri now confirmed, we’ve summed up the most important stuff, so you know what to expect:

Express yourself in a whole new way using Messages.  Send a message in your own handwriting, change the way your message bubbles look and say it the way you want to say it, swap out words for emojis by simply tapping the screen or add a personal touch and draw over your videos.

Siri is now open to your favourite apps.  Now you’ll be able to ask things like “send a WeChat to Nancy saying I’ll be five minutes late.” That brings up an interface to interact with WeChat directly.  Supported apps already include WeChat, and WhatsApp for communication, as well as Uber, Runkeeper, MapMyRun, and Skype (among others) for VoIP calls.

Apple maps will become far more interactive. Just like Siri, the new proactive Maps app will make suggestions for where you’re likely to go and the fastest way to get there.

The new Photos app lets you rediscover cherished memories from your favourite holiday or a great birthday meal.  You can even make a movie out of them, similar to HTC’s Zoe feature.

The new “Raise to wake” feature means, as the name suggests, simply picking your iPhone up will wake it. Your notifications will be there and you can respond to and interact with the related app.  You can even view photos and videos in your notifications.

iOS 10 will be available as a free update for the following devices: iPhone 5 and higher, iPad mini 2 and higher, and iPad 4th generation and the subsequent iPad Air and iPad Pro models and also iPod touch 6th gen.
