How to check your Phone is backing up

The data on your phone is important and highly personal, even more so if you use your phone for business. Imagine then you lose it or it’s damaged or stolen; if you haven’t backed your data up, you’ll lose that too.

Backups these days are automatic and happen in the background without you knowing. When you first set your phone up you probably signed in to your iCloud (Apple) or Google account (Android) and your backup has been working in the background ever since. However, it’s worth checking your phone is definitely backing your important data up regularly. Here’s how to check your settings:

Android

To confirm your Android phone is backing up:

  1. Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Settings and look for Backup & restore or Backup & reset.
  3. If not on already, toggle Back up my data and make sure your Google account is linked.

Apple

To turn on iCloud Backup:

  1. Make sure you device is connected to Wi-Fi.
  2. Tap Settings > iCloud > Backup.
  3. Turn on iCloud Backup if it isn’t already turned on.
  4. Make sure you are on a Wi-Fi connection and tap Back Up Now.
  5. Check your backup by tapping Settings > iCloud > Storage > Manage Storage, and then select your device. You should see your latest backup listed.

The first 5GB of files with iCloud Backup are free. If you want more than 5GB of storage in your iCloud backup, you’ll have to pay a monthly fee.
