Background App Refresh could be draining your data

26th July 2017

If your phone is using Mobile Data instead of Wi-Fi, it could still drain your data even if it’s locked. A number of apps work in the background whether your phone is locked or unlocked. These include Email, WhatsApp, Facebook, App/Play Store and Snapchat.

Snapchat’s latest update brought a feature called Snap Map. Snap Map let’s you go a step further and actually see where your friends are at any given time. Hiding your location is easy (Open Snapchat > Pinch your screen > Select Settings > Ghost Mode). However, it’s the data it uses we’re concerned about. If you’re not using Snapchat via Wi-Fi only and tend to leave your Mobile Data permanently switched on,  the app is constantly working in the background to track your location. Snapchat also works in the background to update your friend’s stories and the Discover Content.

What Should I Do

It’s worth checking data usage to monitor what apps are draining the most data. If you prefer to leave your Mobile Data switched on while you’re on the go, try selecting individual apps to update via Wi-Fi only. On iPhone Select Settings > Mobile > scroll down and toggle on/off selected apps.

Alternatively, you can restrict background app refresh for individual apps on both Android and Apple iPhones. On your Android phone hit Settings > Data Usage > Select an app > Toggle Restrict Background App Data. For iPhone launch Settings > General > Background App Refresh > Toggle app on/off.
